INITITATIVE TO REPEAL SALES TAX ON
RENEWABLE FUELS (BIOFUELS)
Work toward the repeal of the 4% percent sales tax on
wood and wood pellets for home heating. Most counties and
municipalities do not tax home heating fuels. There is no NY
state sales tax on home heating fuels, so local governments
can repeal the tax. Ithaca and Tompkins County seem to have
overlooked this very practical step to promote local and
renewable fuels. The estimated yearly sales tax revenue from
wood and pellets is less than $40,000, a very small
concession to local and renewable energy users.
Green rhetoric, hybrid TCAT buses, and solar panels on the
County Library, should be followed with the repeal of the 4%
sales tax by the Tompkins County Legislature. Rhetoric and
policy should be consistent.

Dear Legislator________
Please repeal the 4% sales tax on renewable fuels such as firewood and
wood pellets for residential heating. Most counties and municipalities do not tax
home heating fuel. Ithaca and Tompkins County seem to have overlooked this
very practical step in efforts to promote local and renewable fuels. I estimate
the yearly sales tax revenue from wood and pellets to be less than $40,000, a
very small concession to local and renewable energy users. Green rhetoric,
hybrid TCAT buses, and solar panels on the County Library, should be
followed with the repeal of the 4% sales tax by the Tompkins County
Legislature. Rhetoric and policy should be consistent.
Sincerely,
